Why habits matter

Small changes, a bigger difference than you’d think

What if putting your phone down a little earlier, getting more morning daylight or waking at a steadier time helped you sleep better? These habits are easy to overlook, but research shows everyday behaviour shapes how we sleep.

  • 30min

phone-free before bed, every night for four weeks

  • 12min

faster to fall asleep, on average

  • 18min

more sleep each night, on average

A small study of 38 university students who already slept poorly. Sleep was self-reported in a diary. He et al., PLoS ONE, 2020.

That’s a meaningful result from one simple change, and it’s what sleep hygiene is about: the everyday habits, routines and surroundings that influence sleep. It isn’t a rigid list of rules. Someone working night shifts, living with pain or caring for a family member will need something different from someone whose routine has simply drifted.

How sleepkind helps

  • Putting the phone down

One hour before bed, sleepkind nudges you to wind down: fewer screens, less input, a slower pace.

  • Morning daylight

A reminder on waking to get outside or near a window, timed around local sunrise if you allow it.

  • A steadier wake-up time

Set your usual wake and bed times once. Every reminder is timed from them, and the wake light glows gently as your wake time nears.

  • Caffeine and meals

A last-caffeine reminder eight hours before bed, and a nudge to finish eating three hours before.

  • Moving during the day

An early-afternoon reminder to move. Walking, stretching or gardening all count.

  • Your sleep space

Built-in sleep sounds, from white noise to rain, ocean and forest, to help you settle.

Turn any reminder on or off. No scores, no streaks. Sleep hygiene isn’t a treatment for insomnia or other sleep disorders. If sleep has been hard for a long time, talk to your GP.

How it works

Two taps a day. sleepkind does the rest.

Tell sleepkind your usual wake and bed times once. After that, two taps anchor your day and the coaching fits around you.

I'm awake

Start the day well

One tap in the morning sets the day in motion. sleepkind then guides you towards morning light, movement and sensible caffeine timing, worked out from your own schedule.

I'm winding down

Ease into the evening

One tap in the evening and sleepkind shifts to the last stretch of the day: lower light, fewer screens and a calmer run into bed.

A day with sleepkind

Sleep starts in the morning

Gentle reminders arrive at the moments that matter, timed from your wake and bed times. Turn any of them on or off.

  1. On waking

    Morning light

A nudge to get daylight early. With your permission, sleepkind can use your location or a nearby city to time this around local sunrise.

  2. Early afternoon

    Time to move

Walking, stretching, gardening. Any daytime movement counts.

  3. 8 hours before bed

    Last caffeine

A friendly cut-off, worked out from your own bedtime.

  4. 3 hours before bed

    Finish eating

Space between your last main meal and sleep.

  5. Early evening

    Dim the lights

Warmer, lower light so the evening feels different from the day.

  6. 1 hour before bed

    Wind down

Less input, fewer screens, a slower pace.

  7. Sunday evening

    A short weekly reflection

How did sleep feel this week? No score, just a moment to notice what helped.

Our approach

Coaching, not tracking

Many sleep apps measure last night. sleepkind helps with the parts of today you can actually change.

What sleepkind doesn't do

  • Score or grade your sleep
  • Need a wearable or smart ring
  • Read your Health app data
  • Show streaks or targets to hit

What sleepkind does

  • Suggests the most useful next step for right now
  • Times reminders around your own day
  • Explains the why in plain language
  • Keeps things simple when sleep has been hard

Built around the S.L.E.E.P. Framework™
