Mindfulness Made More Accessible
At Beam, we are passionate about creating tools that bring mindfulness and wellbeing to everyone, especially those who are often underserved. People living with Alzheimer's, dementia, chronic pain, mobility challenges, or other cognitive and physical conditions deserve the same access to calm, comfort and clarity that wellbeing practices can offer.
That is why we have poured our hearts into designing Beam. Every element of the app, from the meditations to the layout, has been thoughtfully crafted to be accessible, inclusive and genuinely usable for anyone who wants it.
Beam is not just another meditation app. It is a welcoming space for those who might otherwise feel excluded from traditional mindfulness tools.
Built with simplicity and care
We understand that simplicity matters when creating tools for people with diverse needs. Beam's meditations use clear, straightforward language, short sentences and gentle pacing, so everyone can follow along.
For example, one of our meditations gently guides users with words like:
"Take a deep breath in... and now slowly let it out. Imagine you're sitting in a warm, sunny garden, surrounded by flowers."
In addition to clear and calming content, Beam's design is intuitive and easy to use. Carers or users themselves can find and start a session with just a tap, removing unnecessary complexity and keeping the app approachable for all.
Helping users find calm in difficult moments
Whether someone is living with anxiety, chronic pain or cognitive challenges, moments of stress can feel overwhelming. Beam's short, focused meditations are designed for exactly these times.
For example, a session titled "Moments of Calm" might include:
"Close your eyes if it feels comfortable. Picture a soft, gentle breeze touching your face. You are safe. You are calm."
These meditations are often paired with soothing soundscapes, like flowing streams or gentle rain, to help create a sense of calm during restless or difficult moments.
Finding steadiness amidst confusion or fatigue
Confusion, disorientation or fatigue are a daily reality for many people living with Alzheimer's, dementia or mobility challenges. Beam includes grounding meditations like "Safe and Sound" that gently invite users back to the present moment:
"Feel the chair or bed beneath you. Notice the way your feet touch the floor. Let's take three slow breaths together... in and out. You are here now."
These sessions are written to feel soothing and reassuring, with a steady, familiar rhythm.
Reconnecting with the world around them
Mindfulness is often about engaging with the world through the senses, and Beam embraces this approach. Sessions like "A Walk Through the Garden" encourage sensory awareness and gentle moments of connection:
"Imagine walking along a garden path. You can smell the flowers, feel the sun on your skin, and hear birds singing nearby. What colours do you see? What sounds do you notice?"
Paired with nature-inspired soundscapes like bird calls or soft wind chimes, these meditations create a gentle, immersive experience.
Support for non-verbal communication and physical needs
We recognise that not everyone communicates verbally or can follow complex instructions. For those with limited mobility, pain or other physical challenges, Beam includes meditations that focus on breathing and gentle hand movements.
For example, in "Breathe with Me", the guide softly encourages:
"Let's take a breath together. Breathe in... and out. If it feels good, place your hand on your heart and feel it rise and fall with each breath."
To make these sessions even more accessible, Beam also incorporates visual aids, such as a pulsating circle that expands and contracts with the breath, providing a clear, non-verbal guide.
A thoughtful approach for every body
Too often, people living with Alzheimer's, dementia, chronic pain or mobility challenges are overlooked when it comes to wellbeing tools. At Beam, we have worked hard to change that by creating an app that is inclusive and informed by research and lived experience.
Beam brings together mindfulness, soundscapes and sound-based tools such as binaural beats, designed with these communities in mind:
- For people living with chronic pain: sessions that can be practised seated, reclined or lying down, at a gentle pace, with no movement required.
- For people with mobility challenges: practices centred on breath, attention and the senses rather than physical postures.
- For people living with cognitive conditions: simple language, short sessions, familiar imagery and calm, sensory-focused soundscapes.
Putting thought and heart into Beam
We have poured thought, care and love into every part of Beam because we truly believe that mindfulness and moments of calm should be available to everyone.
Our mission is to create a space where people with diverse needs, including cognitive, physical and emotional challenges, feel seen, supported and included. Whether it is through a soothing meditation, a calming soundscape or a simple breathing exercise, Beam is here to make mindfulness accessible for all.
Why we're so passionate about this
Beam was created to fill a gap in wellbeing tools. Mindfulness and meditation are often seen as practices for people who already have the time, energy and ability to focus, but that leaves so many people behind.
We believe that everyone deserves a moment of calm, a connection to their surroundings, and tools that were made with them in mind. With Beam, we are creating those moments for users and their carers, making wellbeing accessible to those who need it most.
